Philosopher Peter van Inwagen calls the invocation of the anthropic principle “one of the most annoyingly obtuse arguments in the history of philosophy.” He considers an analogy:

Suppose you are in a situation in which you must draw a straw from a bundle of 1,048,576 straws of different lengths, and suppose it has been decreed that if you don’t draw the shortest straw in the bundle you will be instantly and painlessly killed: you will be killed so fast you won’t have time to realize you didn’t draw the shortest straw. Reluctantly—but you have no alternative—you draw a straw and are astonished to find yourself alive and holding the shortest straw. What should you conclude?6
